Water-Powered Car Tackles Global Warming Israeli inventor Da
Israeli inventor Danny Garkovich developed a device that allows his car to produce hydrogen. His car is now eco-friendly and runs more efficiently.
[Danny Garkovich, Inventor]:
"The idea was to do something to contribute a grain of sand to help stop the effect of global warming, this is where it began. The second thing is that I drive to Ben Gurion University every day because that's where I work and I wanted to see how I could save some fuel because it is quite a distance and I wanted to save on gas."
The vehicle uses a diesel engine to produce the electricity needed to extract hydrogen from water.
[Danny Garkovich, Inventor]:
"By creating an electric current flow between the electrodes what we are essentially doing is extracting hydrogen from the water and we then use the flammable gas to help power the vehicle."
While Garkovich helps the environment, he also saves money. His vehicle uses 35 percent less diesel than before. The addition of hydrogen to the air intake makes for much more efficient combustion, and this is what reduces the quantity of fuel required per stroke.
Although hydrogen is a highly combustible gas, Garkovich says it is less dangerous when produced "on-site" by electrolysis than if stored in a pressurized canister as all the gas is consumed immediately in the diesel engine.
Garkovich hopes his invention will hit mainstream society and be available for use in cars, buses, trucks and even in trains.
[Danny Garkovich, Inventor]:
"It is suitable for every kind of engine and the purpose is to use existing vehicles without changing or revolutionizing the mechanics of the engine because by the time the smart people at the car companies come up with their own inventions, neither you or I will be able to buy it. So for now we will make use in the simplest way of what nature provides for us."
The vehicle was put to the test and showed that it emitted almost no polluting gases. [...]

Medical Waste Processor Pollutes Village in Southern China
Residents of Guangming Village in China’s Guangdong Province say this waste processing plant is polluting their land, and possibly making them sick.
The Guangdong Medical Waste Processing Station was built in 1996. According to local media, it now processes more than 30 tons of waste per day.
Villagers say in recent years the plant began processing household waste and billows out pungent black smoke every day.
“It’s been burning a lot the past two years. There are a lot of pollutants. It’s not just processing medical waste. They’ve been contracted to process [regular] trash in Guangming Village, and they burn the trash right there.”
The waste station is located less than a third of a mile from where villagers live. They say it has polluted the underground water and destroyed the local plantations. Villagers also suspect the pollutants from the station are making people sick.
“Some have died, and they’re not sure what diseases they had. In any case, in recent years a lot of middle-aged women around here are sick.”
An engineer at the waste station told the Guangzhou Daily News that the black smoke is caused by malfunctioning incinerators. He said the smoke is toxic, but he would not elaborate on what toxins are present.
Villagers say they’ve told local officials about the pollution many times, but nothing has been done about it. Last year, the village’s Communist Party Committee renewed the contract with the waste station for another 10 years.

Five Jailed for Contaminating Water for Huai'an City, China
In China’s Jiangsu Province, five people have been jailed for contaminating the water supply for the five million people living in Huai'an city.
In late February, residents of Huai'an discovered a strange smell coming out of their taps. An investigation revealed petrochemical company Hongze Rihui Adjuvant had been discharging industrial waste into an irrigation ditch connected to the city’s water supply. City authorities had to cut the water off for a week.
On Friday, a court in Hongze County gave prison terms to eight employees of the firm ranging from nine to 29 months. Three of the employees received suspended sentences with a probationary term, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The company was also fined one million yuan (almost $150,000 U.S. dollars) and ordered to pay 350,000 yuan in compensation to the water company.
According to state-run Xinhua, at least 15 million cubic meters of contaminated water was taken into the city’s tap network before authorities shut down the supply.
