A lot of new terminology has sprung up lately when it comes to the environment. Sustainability, biofuels, biomass and green washing are becoming common terms. This blog will address the term “green washing”. Simply put this term applies to companies who deliberately overstate their commitment to using environmentally friendly alternatives ways to do business.
Ad executives, as well as those people that hire and condone their advertisements, are both equally guilty of engaging in these deceptive practices. In doing so, they are suggesting that you are so dumb that you can easily be fooled into thinking changes made in a product or product line was actually done in a green way.
The problem is that despite efforts by the National Organic Program, coming up with a single regulation that would cover all federally mandated labels with a specific definition. The declaration that the nutrition in food must be labeled in a certain way is nearly as hard as trying to define the term “green”.
What is needed is education on the many facets of pollution. It is only in this way that consumers will really understand and be able to analyze products and services and judge for themselves if it really is good for the environment.
Retail giant, Walmart, is leading the way with a labeling system to show consumers how green a product actually is, thus giving them a choice as to whether or not to purchase the item. They are working towards a sustainable product line through the use of this index system.
